The Adopt-a-School Program

The Adopt-a-School program is a model for field-based art teacher education throughout the nation. Dr Szekely first introduced the program in New York City in 1971, and he continues to direct it at the University of Kentucky. The Adopt-a-School program was the first program to move the preparation of future art teachers from the university classroom to public school sites. The program emphasizes future teachers working with children in different school settings at all stages of education. Many newspaper and journal articles have been written about this award-winning program. In addition, the program has been the subject of several dissertations. A video has been created about the Adopt-a-School project, explaining the structure of the program with views of classroom situations.
